The Development of Learning Kit Using Communicative Language Teaching Approach to Enhance English Speaking Skills for the First Graders

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to 1) develop a learning kit to improve English speaking skills for the first graders through communicative language teaching approach based on the efficiency criteria 75/75 2) measure the effectiveness index of using the learning kit and 3) compare the students’ speaking skills using the learning kit before and after using the learning kit. The sample was 30 Thai first graders studying in the second semester of academic year 2023 at a large school in north eastern of Thailand, Thailand, who were selected by cluster sampling. The research instruments were the English speaking activity kit containing 12 English speaking skills lesson plans and an English speaking performance test, which had the index of item - objective congruence of .97, the difficulty indices between .30 to .78, the discrimination indices between .31 to .72, and the reliability of .75. The statistics used for data analysis was percentage, mean, standard deviation, efficiency value, effectiveness index, and t-test. The research findings were 1) the efficiency of the learning kit was 77.69/75.3, 2) the effectiveness value of speaking skill was 73.12 percent and 3) the students’ English speaking skills after using the kit was statistically higher than those before using it at .01 level of significance.
