Development of lesson plans by using problem-based learning and Questioning techniques to develop Reading skills and Analytic thinking of Primary 5 students

Abstract

The purposes of this research were 1)to develop lesson plans which apply problem-based learning and questioning techniques to develop the reading and analytic thinking skills of Primary 5 students, 2) to compare the reading and analytic thinking skills before and after studying in accordance with the lesson plans which apply problem-based learning and questioning techniques to develop reading skills and analytic thinking of Primary 5 students. The sample group consisted of 18 students of Primary 5, Bankaen Wittaya School, Huai So Subdistrict, Education Network Center School, Chiang Rai Primary Educational Service Area Office, Region 4 during the first semester of the Academic year 2021. They were selected by purposive sampling. The research instruments consist of 1) lesson plans, 2) reading and writing ability screening forms (Student Version) Primary 5 students of the Thai Language Institute Office of Academic Affairs and Educational Standards Office of the Basic Education Commission Ministry of Education, Issue 1, Reading, Part 2, Reading Comprehension และ 3) test of analytic thinking. The data were analyzed by finding the mean value, standard deviation and using the t-test for dependent samples. The research found that 1. The development of lesson plans comprises of 6 steps. These were 1) identify the problem while the teacher ask questions at knowledge and understanding level, 2) understanding the problem while answering questions at knowledge level, 3) Searching information about the problem while answering comprehension questions, 4) synthesizing knowledge while the teacher uses questions at comprehension, application,
analysis and synthesis level, 5) summarizing and evaluating while the teacher uses questions at knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation level and 6) presenting and evaluating the task, while answering questions at analytical level. This lesson plans were able to develop the reading and analytic thinking skills of the students. 2. The reading and analytic thinking skills of Primary 5 students were significantly higher after studying in accordance with the lesson plans applying problem-based learning and questioning techniques than before learning at the.05 level.
